INCREASING DEMAND FOR VISTIVEâ„¢ SOYBEANS WILL ADD TO GROWER PROFITS
The consumer market opportunity for low-linolenic oil is driving demand among food manufactures, and processors continue to pay a premium to growers that grow and deliver Vistive™ soybeans. Low-Lin soybeans were the first in a growing portfolio of consumer driven oil products that will provide a market for profitable soybean production in the future.
The development and expansion of the Vistive™ soybean platform is significant because as consumers demand healthier products with lower trans-fat and saturated fat levels soybean producers will need opportunities to deliver on these needs through enhanced soybean varieties such as Vistive™ provides.
In 2006, before labeling for trans fats was in place, soybean oil represented over 60% of the total vegetable fats and oils consumed in the United States. Today, soybean oil usage in the U.S. has decreased substantially, from the reduced use of hydrogenated soybean oil. In order for soybean oil to regain its leadership position in vegetable oils, the soybean industry needs to supply the market with the kind of properties that consumers demand. Vistive™ low-lin (Vistive™ I) is the current product available to address the trans fat concern, containing less that 3% linolenic acid, reducing the need for hydrogenation and therefore eliminating trans-fats for those applications where it meets food company specifications.
Future healthy soybean oil products in the pipeline include Vistive™ High Stearate soybeans which will produce oil that is suitable for a solid fat to be used in baking, offering significantly improved health benefits over palm oil. We will also be growing Vistive™ III soybeans that will deliver very low-saturated fat content and increased oleic levels, for oil that will be used in frying. Vistive™ III will be a heart friendly product with oil properties similar to those that olive oil provides today. Also on the horizon will be Vistive™ Omega III soybeans with the additional feature of increased Omega 3 oil levels, combining the healthy aspects of Vistive™ III with the benefits currently accessed from fish oils.
It is important to note that with the advancement of these products they will also carry all of the new traits that are on the horizon such as RR 2 Yield.
There are currently Vistive™ contracts being offered in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan and on the East Coast that will carry a .55 to .60 cent premium.
