BOOST YIELDS BY SIDEDRESSING NITROGEN
(June 2008) Not only did the significant rainfall received this spring push planting back for many growers and force some growers to replant entirely, but it also contributed to a loss of nitrogen throughout the region.
"It wasn't uncommon for nitrogen losses to reach 100 pounds per acre in some areas," says Ryan Wolf, CROPLAN GENETICS® seed regional agronomist. "Denitrification is also a concern in areas that consist of poorly drained soils."
To achieve the maximum rate of nitrogen uptake, the corn should be side dressed when it's about 16 inches tall. However, nitrogen applications as late as the tasseling stage can still improve yields. Regardless, growers should perform a soil test prior to replacing nitrogen levels to identify areas of need and make the most efficient use of their investment.
"A split sidedress of nitrogen can minimize the potential of leaching on sandy soils and irrigated corn, as well," Wolf adds.
